QOUTE FROM PRINCIPAL AT EXETER AND MY REJOINDER

In his 2020 Opening Assembly addressPrincipal Rawson reaffirmed the school’s commitment to “taking important, concrete steps toward realizing our vision for diversity, equity and inclusion” this year. “I encourage all of you to commit to this work,” he said to students. “When it feels a little uncomfortable, commit yourselves even more fully. The work that you do here to help us achieve our vision for diversity, equity and inclusion is just one way you will be preparing yourselves to lead purposeful lives.”

MY REJOINDER -- MY EXETER EDUCATION

At one time learning at Exeter concentrated on how to think critically; how the ancients' thinking evolved and what it had right and wrong from our modern perspective; the study of science and how it works to change people's lives for the better; the study of various foreign languages, important because it leads to a better understanding of other cultures; how the imperfect America, warts and all, became a beacon of freedom and enlightenment to all the world; how rigorous debate around an oval shaped table was the most effective way to learn; and finally how a belief and acknowledgment of a Supreme Being led to a firm grounding in morality and eternal truths, inevitably bringing us to an understanding and appreciation of the brotherhood of all mankind. That's the Exeter education I remember from the 1950s. The new vision of the purpose of an Exeter education articulated by Principal Rawson above is clearly quite different. His  vision of the driving objective of an Exeter education is the achievement of something called 'diversity, equity and inclusion',  the study and accomplishment of which supposedly leads  to 'preparing yourselves to lead purposeful lives'.  No mention here of the application of hard work, rigorous scholarship, the development of critical thinking skills, and learning from the study of the past nor even a mention of eternal truths and the role of religion -- the sum of all the inevitable and natural by-product of the liberal education offered by my Exeter educational experience of the 50s. That education provided a firm foundation for my lifelong experience of continuing learning. I am grateful to Exeter for it.

Our commitment to excellence in education and our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion go hand in hand. One cannot be separated from the other."
